Local Programs:
  • Books to Prisoners: An Urbana Illinois based project providing books to Illinois inmates at no cost by mail as well as through two county jail libraries which we operate... Our volunteers interact with inmates by reading their letters, selecting books from our collection of donated materials and sending books to inmates in response to their requests. We also staff the two lending libraries located in the Champaign, IL County jails.  If you would prefer to work behind the scenes, we can also utilize your unique skills managing volunteers, coordinating book donations and fund raising, as well as many other education & outreach as well as technical tasks.
  • Prison Justice Project (an EJP Program): The mission of the Prison Justice Project is to bring social justice and awareness to issues pertaining to incarceration through organizing monthly forums at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ultimately, we hope that the Prison Justice Project will become a large, diverse community of individuals who are passionate about transforming the current criminal justice system. Most members of the Prison Justice Project are undergraduate students, but membership is open to all.

State Based Programs:
  • The 3 R's Project: The 3Rs (Reading Reduces Recidivism) Project is a statewide effort to build the library resources available to adult prisoners in the 26 prisons in the state of Illinois. We collect requests lists from prison library staff and help arrange book transfers.  This is accomplished in several ways:
    • Librarians come to a collection site to choose books they need, then transport them back to their libraries.
    • A volunteer may deliver donations directly to a prison or arrange a meet-up between prison staff and a volunteer to transfer books.
    • 3Rs uses monetary donations to purchase books that are needed but rarely donated
3Rs is located in Urbana-Champaign, IL and works closely with our sister organization Urbana Champaign Books to Prisoners.
