Daughter of God. Speaker of life.  Social Justice Advocate. Black community supporter. Black Feminist. Optimist. Giver of hope. Believer in Change. Educator. Coach.

Tanisha has always wanted to help others and when she was younger, she thought that meant becoming a doctor or nurse. Even as a child she was a helper and nurturer, taking care of those around her, including her brothers, mother and grandmother. It wasn’t until college that Tanisha realized helping meant that it needed to be extended beyond the home in order for it to be effective. She took a Sociology course that spoke to her and led her to obtain a Masters in Social Work.

Tanisha worked in the field for a few years; adults with different abilities, children on residential treatment floors, perpetrators and survivors of domestic violence, families and children in juvenile detention centers. She also worked with minority students at a predominately white institution  where she helped them achieve their goals on a personal and professional level.

What was consistent in all of these roles were the stories of the underrepresented. Stories of disadvantage, lack of resources and lack of support. Tanisha became the go-to person for them and that remains the same. She helped them see the greatness that lies within them. Tanisha is the person that can help you reach your dreams despite your circumstances or environment, she was that person for herself.

As a speaker, Tanisha motivates and inspires people to walk in their purpose, live up to their full potential and succeed despite their obstacles. She helps agencies gain and enhance their cultural competency through microaggression workshops and have delivered keynote speeches at great places such as the YWCA and TRiO. Tanisha has facilitated workshops for agencies such as Genesy’s works and more. Check out some of those testimonials.

Race To fill the vacancy of the Hon. Harry E. Clem

R - Sami Anderson

Facebook campaign page: https://www.facebook.com/friendsofsamianderson/
About from campaign website: http://votesamianderson.com/
Sami Anderson’s legal career began in the year 2000, when working towards her Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice at Illinois State University, she began an internship with a local Champaign attorney.  Upon completing this internship, Sami was hired by the Attorney with whom she interned for, as his Legal Assistant.  The transition from an intern to an employee in a law office was designed to provide Sami with the experience and the knowledge of the inner workings and daily tasks of an attorney, so that a determination could be made as to whether she would continue on the path to become an attorney.  As it turned out, working as a Legal Assistant did influence Sami's decisions with regards to her professional trajectory as she enrolled in Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004 and made the move to Grand Rapids, Michigan, leaving behind the home and community that she had known since 1994.  Sami chose Thomas M. Cooley Law School because it offered a flexible class schedule which would allow her to continue her employment remotely.

In March of 2005, Sami married Garrett Anderson, a native of Bellflower, Illinois while he was home on leave and in May of that year, Garrett deployed to Iraq.  Garrett's Orders stated that he was scheduled for an 18 month deployment and it was anticipated Sami would graduate from Law school in December of 2006, 7 months after her husband's scheduled return.

October 2005, would be the month that would radically transform Sami's life and the life of her husband, Garrett.  During her second year of law school, Sami was notified that Garrett had been severely wounded in action.  There were no further details provided, only information as to when Garrett was expected to be stateside.  Within hours of receiving this news, Sami began the long drive to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where she would eventually meet the helicopter that transported Garrett to the hospital.  Sami was  immediately told that because of the severity of Garrett's injuries, the loss of his right arm, severe facial and head wounds, Garrett would be hospitalized at Walter Reed for at least one year.  In the span of days, Sami had to make the decision as to either return to her Fall Semester in law school or to withdraw from the already half completed semester.  To Sami, this decision was easy.  She chose her husband.  This easy choice did come with risks, Thomas M. Cooley Law School informed Sami that she would have to begin her studies again.

While living with Garrett at Walter Reed, Sami was introduced to a volunteer who happened to be a retired Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Veterans Affairs.  During one of their many conversations, the retired judge asked Sami whether her plans included returning to law school.  Sami shared with him her intentions of remaining by Garrett's side during his recovery and how the care Garrett needed and her work schedule consumed most if not all of her waking hours.  A few days later the retired judge spoke to Sami again and declared a seat had been secured for her at Columbus School of Law at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and in a moment of divine intervention, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, who had a "no visiting" student policy, granted Sami a visiting student status for the Spring of 2006 semester.

In January of 2006, Sami became a full-time student at Columbus School of Law.  Sami's days and nights were consumed with attending classes, completing course work, working remotely for the law office in Champaign, and being a caregiver to and an advocate for, her husband, Garrett.

With Garrett's discharge from Walter Reed in May 2006, Sami and Garrett returned to Champaign.  After transitioning her family back into civilian life and life as a family living with disabilities, Sami began the Summer Semester at Thomas M. Cooley Law School as a full-time student.  This required making weekly trips to Michigan to attend classes in addition to the 32 hours per week she clerked for the law office in Champaign.  In the Fall of 2006, Sami and Garrett welcomed their daughter and she, too, would travel each weekend to Michigan so Sami could attend classes.

In May of 2007, Sami graduated with her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.  She sat for the bar that summer and was sworn in as an attorney in November of 2007.

After becoming a licensed attorney, Sami continued to work for the attorney in Champaign and in March of 2008, Sami opened a private practice which continues to be one of the most successful law offices in the area.

Based upon her own experiences with securing benefits for her husband, Garrett, Sami has provided legal services to injured veterans and their families, on a pro bono basis and has successfully secured disability benefits for her client's through the Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Disability.

In 2008, Sami created a program, Wills for Soldiers, and provided legal assistance in the preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney for soldiers deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan on a pro bono basis.

In an effort to provide continued support for families and soldiers, Sami became the Family Readiness Group Leader for the Illinois National Guard for the year long deployment, 2008-2009, deployment to Afghanistan.  Sami's continued work was recognized when she was awarded the Minuteman Award which is the highest civilian award granted by the National Guard for Volunteer Services.  Sami Anderson was also the 2015 Illinois Fellow for the Elizabeth Dole Foundation for the Advocacy of Veterans and Caregivers.

Sami resides in rural Champaign County with Garrett and their daughters, Skyler and Alex.

Sami’s Education:
  • Centennial High School, Champaign - 1995
  • Parkland College – 1998
  • Illinois State University – 2000
  • Thomas M. Cooley Law School - 2007
Sami's Professional Memberships:
  •  Champaign County Bar Association
  • Chair of the Champaign County Family Law Bar

News-Gazette endorsement.

About (from campaign website):
In 2016, Justice Rita Garman and the Illinois Supreme Court appointed me to the Sixth Judicial Court. After 18 years as Champaign County’s Chief Public Defender, I was ready to step into a greater role in our state’s judicial system. Presiding over cases that impact the families and members of our community has shown me the need for clear, thoughtful leadership in our judicial system. And that is why I’m running for the Sixth Judicial Court.

Two of my greatest skills are using common sense and bringing people together to find common ground in challenging disputes. As Champaign County’s primary family law judge, I work tirelessly to mediate all cases, many of which are emotionally-charged custody disputes.

I’m proactive in my approach to cases. I actively participate in settlement conferences with the goal of avoiding lengthy, expensive and contentious trials, and benefitting the various parties.

In the course of my career, I’ve tried more than 100 jury trials, represented thousands of clients, supervised staff and managed taxpayer money responsibly. My experience and perspective puts me in a prime position to continue my work as the Sixth Circuit Judge of Illinois.

I’m passionate about my work and would like to continue doing it. That’s why I’m asking for your vote in the March Republican primary for Circuit Judge in Champaign, Douglas, DeWitt, Macon, Moultrie, and Piatt counties.

Judge Rosenbaum graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law and joined the Champaign County Public Defender’s Office. The Circuit Judges appointed him Chief Public Defender in 1998.

Judge Rosenbaum has tried some of the most high-profile criminal cases in Champaign County. He did so with integrity and was respected by prosecutors, law enforcement and the community for zealously representing his clients but also by doing justice.

About (from website):
Gordy Hulten has served as Champaign County Clerk since 2011, and is now a candidate for the new office of Champaign County Executive. As County Executive, Gordy will lead County government to improve services and responsiveness for all Champaign County residents, while increasing efficiencies and aggressively seeking to reduce costs.
As Champaign County Clerk, Gordy Hulten has worked diligently to make voting more accessible while using new technology and innovations to save Champaign County taxpayers thousands of dollars. He has led voter registration efforts that have resulted in a record number of registered voters in the County, and has earned bipartisan praise for the implementation of eight new early voting locations throughout the County to allow residents to vote early with greater ease. Gordy’s efforts have led to record voter turnout and record voter participation in early voting and voting by mail.
Gordy has been a responsible and efficient steward of taxpayer dollars. Under his leadership, his office designed and implemented electronic pollbooks at no cost to local taxpayers to make the Election Day experience more accurate and efficient for voters. These pollbooks meant that new state mandates such as Election Day Registration have been easier and cheaper for Champaign County to implement. He has also utilized technology and cost-cutting measures to trim thousands of dollars from his annual office budget. Hulten also led a coordinated process for the decennial 2011 redistricting process throughout the County, saving numerous agencies across the county thousands of dollars.
As a bipartisan leader in the community, Gordy Hulten has extensive experience working with the Champaign County Board to earn support for numerous legislative priorities. This experience will be critical while serving as County Executive, leading many County Departments and collaborating with the County Board to implement policy priorities and aggressively pursue financial responsibility for County Government.
Gordy is an active member of the Champaign-Urbana community. He is a member of the Champaign Rotary Club and serves on the Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband Not-for-Profit Board of Directors, seeking to expand our communities’ access to job-creating high-speed fiber internet. He serves as Cubmaster of Pack 98 Cub Scouts, based at Barkstall Elementary, and volunteers with Illinois Futbol Club. He previously served as a member of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District Foundation Board and Champaign County Chamber of Commerce Government Council. He also served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve.
Gordy is a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois, and lives in Champaign with his wife, Pam, and their children, Will and Cate.

News-Gazette: County clerk joins race for new executive position
Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten said Monday that he is a candidate to become the county's first elected executive in 2018.
Hulten is the second person, and the first Republican, to announce for the office that was created last year by county voters. Earlier this month, Urbana Democrat Darlene Kloeppel said that she would run for the position.
His announcement for county executive carries political risk for Hulten, who has been county clerk since 2011 and before that served about a year on the Champaign City Council. His term as county clerk also ends in December 2018, so if he loses either a Republican primary next spring or the general election in November 2018, he would be without a job.
Hulten, 42, said he would focus on cutting costs in county government, coordinating economic-development efforts and developing a process to draw an independently developed county board district map after the next census.
"I'm going to focus on three things: fiscal responsibility, such as driving cost savings for county government, driving efficiencies and improving services at a lower and lower cost to taxpayers; and economic development. I think county government, and the county executive especially, have a role to play in economic development and leading the charge on a regional level for a more regionally focused economic development," he said. "And third is independent redistricting. Independent redistricting is a critical thing that Champaign County needs in order for its government to improve. It will be a key focus of my campaign."

After earning a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa, Darlene worked on the Federal project that integrated hospice services into the Medicare payment system and the start-up of some of the first hospices around the United States, including Hospice Atlanta which provided pediatric hospice care and hospice care for persons with AIDS.
Darlene attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for additional degrees in architecture and city planning, after which she provided correctional facility consulting through Rosser Fabrap Justice Systems and later offered strategic and facility planning for health care corporations as a senior consultant with Ernst and Young, LLP.
Wanting to move back to the Midwest, Darlene and Jim chose Champaign County, where Jim became a science writer for the University of Illinois.  Darlene first assisted with the leadership transition of corporate executives from three merging hospital systems as they formed Provena Health Care (now Presence) and then served for 15 years as the Community Services Director of the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission.  During her public administration tenure, she managed over $11 million in Federal, state and local grants through diverse public/private partnerships.  Since then, she has provided regional consulting services.
Darlene and Jim raised four children in Urbana, and Darlene spends leisure time with her grandchildren and in her garden.  She is a leader in Urbana Rotary and in her church, and has served on many local boards and committees.  She is committed to providing a safe and healthy community for residents of Champaign County.
Endorsements: from campaign website here.
The lone announced candidate for Champaign County executive said today the preliminary salary for the position — $117,269 — is too high and should be modified.
The county board is expected to take a final vote on the salary for the new position at Thursday night's meeting.
Last week at a county board committee of the whole meeting three salary levels — $29,274, $70,000 and $117, 269 — were voted on. The highest salary, supported by the board's Republican bloc and three Democrats, got the greatest number of votes.
"I think it would be better to set it either at the midpoint or a little bit lower," said candidate Darlene Kloeppel, an Urbana Democrat. "Eventually it may rise if the job requires that. Eventually there may be money available to pay for a second deputy, or some kind of part-time person or to hire a consultant. There are lots of options on how that could be spent.
"It seems that to put that all in one person upfront not knowing who that will be seems a little unwise to me."

Facebook campaign site: https://www.facebook.com/DanosForAuditor/
About from campaign website: http://danosforauditor.com

I’m a longtime resident of Champaign and Illinois alumnus who seeks to be the first CPA elected Champaign County Auditor. I decided to run for County Auditor because recent news items underscore how much we need an auditor who can master the budget, firm up internal controls, and upgrade the record-keeping and transparency of the office. As an accountant at EY in the field of Tax Technology and Data Analytics, I will make sure that our proposed transition away from the antiquated AS400 system is smooth and that data we already have is placed in the public’s hands.

Also, as a financial analyst who has done forecasting and auditing at Christie Clinic and PersonalCare HMO, I have the requisite experience for this office, which requires engaged leadership and competence in financial and quantitative matters. With a Bachelor’s in Economics and a Master’s in Actuarial Science, I also bring a skill set that complements that of the staff CPA in the Auditor’s office.

As a recent Math instructor (CFT–Local 1925), I have taught at Centennial High School, Parkland College, and at the University of Illinois. My commitment to posterity extends to making sure that today’s students are not burdened with additional public debt as future taxpayers—and thus, I am especially motivated to keep our budget balanced. After all, inter-generational equity is an important progressive value.

About information from Campaign website: https://dustinforsheriff.com/
Although I grew up in Effingham, my husband, Tony, and I have lived in Champaign County since 2008. I am currently a tenured faculty member and criminal justice program coordinator at Lake Land College, a community college in Mattoon, and serve as a part-time police officer for the college as well. I have formerly served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. My husband is a Registered Nurse at Carle Foundation Hospital.

I have a vested interest in equality and diversity throughout our criminal justice system. I feel my education and experience can help me to not only make a positive impact toward equality and diversity through the position of Sheriff, but also help facilitate progressive reform. I’m fearful if the Republican candidate is elected, the criminal justice system will continue with a “business as usual” approach and not facilitate meaningful change for our community and our criminal justice system. My goal is that through partnerships and community collaboration, we can facilitate progressive reform for the criminal justice system to help ensure a stronger, safer community for all of us.

Formal Education

Master of Science in Criminology/Criminal Justice

This formal education will help me to not only consider the enforcement side of our criminal justice system, but also consider whycrime is occurring and where changes can be made to prevent it, better rehabilitate offenders and contribute to an overall safer community.

Doctorate in Leadership

This formal education in topics such as strategic planning, managing fiscal resources, recruiting and others compliment my practical leadership skills to make me a well-rounded public service leader.

Highlight of Skills and Abilities
  • 19 years in the criminal justice field, including private security, 911 telecommunications, criminal investigations, uniformed patrol and administration.
  • Experience providing leadership to a union of approximately 130 members, including contract negotiations.
  • Experience writing and providing oversight to federal grants.
  • Experience with emergency preparedness and threat assessment.

From the article:
Webber has been hearing cases in three of the circuit’s smaller counties  since his appointment as an associate judge in June of 2014.
“I am excited about the change and coming to Champaign County and having one permanent office instead of three that feel temporary, even though everyone in all these counties has been very receptive,” said Webber.

He will assume the family court docket that Blockman has administered for most of the 20 years he has been on the bench.

* R - Randy Rosenbaum -

Facebook campaign page: https://www.facebook.com/JudgeRandyRosenbaum/Campaign website: https://judgerandyrosenbaum.com

Retention Election Candidates
2018's Midterm election has two retention election choices on Champaign County ballots:
A retention election or judicial retention is a periodic process whereby voters are asked whether an incumbent judge should remain in office for another term. The judge, who does not face an opponent, is removed from the position if a percentage of voters (often 50 percent) indicate that he or she should not be retained.
Retention votes are frequently thought of in connection with the assisted appointment method of judicial selection. However, some states that choose state supreme court justices in partisan or nonpartisan elections for their initial term use retention elections for subsequent terms on the court.
Illinois elects judges in an initial partisan election, and then has retention elections where their party is not listed.
Judges in retention elections this year:

Thomas E. Griffith (originally ran and won as a Republican in 2016): Ballotpedia information and links here
