R - Traci Nally - Candidate
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/traci.nally
Recent N-G highlight of her candidacy:
Traci Nally, who is general counsel and vice president of human resources for The News-Gazette, is the only Republican candidate in the district thus far.

Nally, who last ran for public office in 2004 as a Republican candidate for circuit judge — losing to Judge Heidi Ladd — said she wants to serve on the county board "because I think I can make a difference."

She said there is no single issue motivating her candidacy.

"I just think the county has to get back to basics and run efficiently and well," she said.

Asked if that meant ending county general fund subsidies for the county-owned nursing home, Nally said, "You can't ignore what the voters said. They said yes, that it's OK to sell it and that they don't want to give it any additional funding. So how can you ignore that?"

She also noted that none of the 22 current board members is a lawyer.

"I'm bringing that, and I just think that I'm a hard worker, and I learn quickly, and I'm not afraid to make hard decisions, and that my professional record is that I'm trustworthy," she said.

D- Pranjal Vachaspati - Candidate

About Me from campaign website: https://www.votepranjal.com/
Champaign County needs elected officials with a diverse array of skills and experience. As a first-generation American, I will bring a perspective that will help represent our diverse community. I understand the challenges and the opportunities that the 24,000 immigrants and even more first- and second-generation Americans in our community face.

As a doctoral candidate in computer science, I will bring much-needed expertise in technology and quantitative analysis to the county board. As Mark Twain said: there are three kinds of lies - lies, damned lies, and statistics. It's too easy for vendors and other organizations to use dressed-up statistics to pull the wool over the county board's eyes. As a scientist who works with data every day, I know how to evaluate these claims, and I know the right questions to ask when it's time to figure out what's really going on. Likewise, I'll make sure the county makes the right decisions in technology purchases and software upgrades that many of our agencies critically need.

A little bit more about me: I grew up not too far from here, in Cleveland, Ohio. I got my bachelor's degree in physics at MIT, and moved to Urbana to continue my education. I study computer science as a tool to use genomes to better understand evolution and the history and diversity of life on Earth. In my (limited) spare time, I'm restoring a 1984 Mazda RX-7 in my garage.

For as long as I can remember, I've been a political junkie. Granted, that's not as long as many of the folks involved in politics around here - one of my earliest political memories is going to a John Kerry rally when I was 12 years old. Now, I'm excited to be running for this office, and looking forward to serving the people of Champaign County, where I've found a new home.
